Herniated Disc Relief at Momentum Health Center

A disc injury changes what you are willing to do. You stop lifting, you stop sitting through a film, and you start measuring every movement against whether it will set things off again. Being told the next step is surgery is a hard place to be sent to first.

A herniated disc does not automatically mean an operation. When disc material presses on a nerve root, the aim is to take pressure off it and give the area room to settle. At Momentum Health Center in Arlington Heights we have a DOC decompression table on site, and digital X-rays we read with you during the visit rather than a week later. If your presentation calls for imaging or an opinion we cannot provide, we will say so and help you get it. Decompression works by creating negative pressure inside the disc, which can draw material back toward the centre and take load off the nerve root. Sessions are gentle, and most people find them the easiest part of their week.

Common Causes of Herniated Discs

Discs are resilient, and they fail for identifiable reasons:

  • Repeated Loading: Years of bending and lifting gradually stress the back of the disc wall.
  • A Single Incident: One awkward lift or a car accident can be the moment a weakened disc gives way.
  • Prolonged Sitting: Sustained flexion pushes disc material backward toward the nerve.
  • Degenerative Change: Discs lose water content with age, which reduces their tolerance to load.
  • Restricted Segments: When neighbouring joints stop moving, the disc between them absorbs more than its share.
  • Poor Core Support: Without the deep muscles doing their job, the spine takes load the muscles should share.

Symptoms Related to Herniated Discs

Disc injuries usually announce themselves clearly:

  • Sharp back pain that arrived suddenly, often during a lift or a twist
  • Pain, numbness or tingling travelling into the buttock, leg or arm
  • Symptoms that worsen with sitting, coughing or sneezing
  • Weakness in a limb, or a foot that catches when you walk
  • Relief in certain positions and immediate aggravation in others

Disc symptoms that include progressive weakness, numbness or any change in bladder or bowel function need urgent medical attention rather than conservative care.
